چکیده

We present a summary of the simulation exercise carried out within the EC Cost Action P11 on the rigorous modeling of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with an elliptically deformed core and noncircular air holes with a high fill factor. The aim of the exercise is to calculate using different numerical methods and to compare several fiber characteristics, such as the spectral dependence of the phase and the group effective indices, the birefringence, the group velocity dispersion and the confinement losses. The simulations are performed using four rigorous approaches: the finite element method (FEM), the source model technique (SMT), the plane wave method (PWM), and the localized function method (LFM). Furthermore, we consider a simplified equivalent fiber method (EFM), in which the real structure of the holey fiber is replaced by an equivalent step index waveguide composed of an elliptical glass core surrounded by air cladding. All these methods are shown to converge well and to provide highly consistent estimations of the PCF characteristics. Qualitative arguments based on the general properties of the wave equation are applied to explain the physical mechanisms one can utilize to tailor the propagation characteristics of nonlinear PCFs.

A Comparative Study of Multipole and Empirical Relations Methods for Effective Index and Dispersion Calculations of Silica-Based Photonic Crystal Fibers

In this paper, we present a solid-core Silica-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) composed of hexagonal lattice of air-holes and calculate the effective index and chromatic dispersion of PCF for different physical parameters using the empirical relations method (ERM). These results are compared with the data obtained from the conventional multipole method (MPM). Our simulation results reveal tha...

Thermal Effects Study on Stimulated Brillouin Light Scattering in Photonic Crystal Fiber

we investigate the temperature-dependences of the Brillouin frequency shift in three different kind of single-mode fibers using a heterodyne method for sensing temperature. Positive dependences coefficients of 0.77, 0.56 and 1.45MHz/0C are demonstrated for 25 km long single-mode fiber, 10 km long non-zero dispersion shifted fiber and 100 m photonic crystal fiber, respectively. The results indic...

Numerical Analysis of Index-Guiding Photonic Crystal Fibers with Low Confinement Loss and Ultra-Flattened Dispersion by FDFD Method

In this article, perfectly matched layer (PML) for the boundary treatment and an efficient compact two dimensional finite-difference frequency-domain (2-D FDFD) method were combined to model photonic crystal fibers (PCF). For photonic crystal fibers, if we assume that the propagation constant along the propagation direction is fixed, three-dimensional hybrid guided modes can be calculated by us...

Investigation of Scalar Modulation Instability in the Presence of Raman Scattering in Photonic Crystal Fibers

In this paper, by including Raman scattering in the coupled-mode equations, the scalar modulation instability in photonic crystal fibers is investigated. The evolution of the pump, Stokes and anti-Stokes waves along the fiber as well as the conversion efficiency for two cases, with and without Raman effect, are studied. The effect of anti-Stokes seed and the pump depletion on the evolution of S...
